Are you one of those people that find it hard to get up in the mornings? Or perhaps you dread pulling yourself out of bed in the mornings because you are just not ready to take on the day?
Don’t worry. You are not the only one. Everyone feels this way sometimes, especially when you just wish you could sleep a little extra or just snuggle under your covers without needing to get up and rush to work. You cannot help yourself but to hit the snooze alarm and get a few more minutes of extra sleep, even if you know you will regret having to rush through to get to work on time.
However, there are ways, and I mean simple and easy-to-follow ways that you can try right away, to make your morning routine less stressful.
Let’s get started on how to make your morning routine something that is bearable and even enjoyable.
1. Make preparations the night before.
I know this seems like a no-brainer or may seem to be something small and insignificant. But I personally tried this out and found myself being able to get to work on time, and the best part is, in a much better mood.
What I did only took me 5 minutes the night before. I lay out the outfit I wanted to wear the next day, pack my work bag, set up the hairdryer if I was planning to wash my hair. It sounds simple, but it made a big difference.
What happened the next day is that my morning went on much more smoothly, without the frustration of deciding what to wear and being afraid I was going to forget something as I leave the house. It took me less time to get ready, and I was in a great mood because I did not have to rush and feel stressed out about being late.
All you need to do is to prepare the things you need the next day, be it your outfit, breakfast or your work materials. This will help your morning go on more efficiently and you will thank yourself the next day.
2. Drink water right when you wake up.
After a whole night’s sleep, we often wake up with our throats feeling dry and dehydrated. Your body has not gotten any hydration since the night before and it can make you feel slightly unwell and lethargic.
Drink large gulps of water first thing you wake up. Not only will it hydrate your body, but you will also feel more refreshed and ready to start the day. This is also a very easy activity that you won’t be able to find excuses to avoid, hence it acts as the perfect “wake up routine” that your body and mind needs to signal yourself to get up. After gulping down water, your body will feel more awake, and you can continue with your morning routine.
The easiest way to do this is to have a bottle of water ready by your bedside, so all you need to do is reach out to it and gulp it down first thing in the morning.
3. Incorporate something you love as part of your morning routine.
Do you sometimes feel it is much easier to wake up on weekends than on workdays? How ironic is that?
Well, the reason it is easier to get up is that you are looking forward to starting the day. As much as we strive to do a job we love, working can sometimes seem daunting and tiring on some days, especially when you are slightly sleep deprived.
One way to combat that is by adding something enjoyable to your morning routine. If you enjoy coffee or tea as much as I do, incorporate it into your morning routine, so you have something to look forward to. Or if you enjoy a hearty breakfast, schedule it into your mornings, so it will make waking up less of a dread. You can even send a text to your loved ones first thing in the morning or write in your gratitude journal as the first thing you do in the morning to start off the day on a right note.
